Description

I almost didn't post this. The context in which I originally drew it could bring me a significant quantity of grief... but every time I see it, it makes my heart feel tingly in very nice ways.

Everypony, this is Wildflour. An earth pony from an unincorporated farm (that means not part of a town) below the northwestern foothills of the Applechain Mountains (of which Foal Mountain is a part). Every so often a pony family has an "odd one out", and in this case, it's her. Instead of occupying herself with family business relating to either the growing, tending, harvesting, storing, processing, transporting, or selling of various grains, or even the tools to do these things, she liked to wander through the wilderness searching for ingredients like nuts, berries, or herbs to incorporate into her recipes. She also made it a point to reach out and talk to every pony she met, be they from distantly neighboring farms or travelers passing through. Often she found inspiration in them for new recipes. More often, however, she feeds them lots and lots of the most amazing bread they had ever experienced.

You see, while some bakers are artisans, for Wildflour it's truly an artform. It's her passion. Her devotion. Bread is not just A Thing She Does; it is THE Thing She Does. All the magical potential tied to her fate is in her craft. Her bread isn't a meal... it's an ~Experience~. The aromas and textures and ideal serving temperatures in her truly prodigious arsenal of breads evoke sensations and even memories. They transport ponies to simpler, happier times. She could go on and on about all the different kinds of bread and all the ways it can be used... and amazingly enough, ponies more often than not LISTEN to her.

Nowadays, she's traveling. After a while, she and her family came to an understanding that everypony would be happier if she were out and about in the world: For her, no longer being cooped up in the same place among ponies who didn't quite appreciate her skills; For them, no longer having a silly, scatter brained dreamer underhoof being less than ideally helpful with the hard, serious work that needed doing.

I've mentioned WF in my journal. When I can be reminded of her, she is a very compelling presence indeed... This character has a seemingly boundless capacity for unconditional love. She is, essentially, thoroughly a spirit of empathy. She sees the best in everyone and knows to her very core that she can knead it out. While I'm pretty sure she's *capable* of understanding malice, it's as though she chooses not to. To her, it is a silly and pointless behavior. She does not fear pain, although she's experienced it. It is that, in her case, an offense or a wound is an event and not a process. For some ponies, "sad" is a thing they "can be"; it can become a part of who they are. For her, sadness is something she can only feel, but never become

If you've read all that, I'm sorry I took up so much of your time. This filly has had a tremendously positive impact on my life though. I feel like there's something about her bigger than me and I can't quite contemplate it all.
